What is it about the little things in life?
We all say we want them. Holding hands while walking along the beach, snuggling on the couch while watching a movie. But do we really see the little things that we already have in our lives? The smile of my oldest when I make a meal that she is so very suprised that she actually likes and then tells me she wants me to definitely make this again. The look on my middle son's face when he gets his homework done, with a little help from mom, before 5 o'clock so he has time to play and give his undivided attention to his baby brother. The look on my youngests' face when either of his siblings play with him. These are the little things that thrill me the most. The things that are constantly changing into different little moments.
I think in our world were we are constantly biraged with electronics, bad news and work, we miss the little things. We miss the joy and satisfaction of our children's small accomplishments. The fingerpainting that they made just for us, gets moved to the way side and easily forgotten. In a time when we are more accessible to everyone in the world we seem to be least accessable to the little people who need us the most. Inaccessable to the the ones who the little things mean the most to. When was the last time that your child picked a flower for you? What was your reaction when they did? Did you pause your cell conversation or merily say "that's nice sweety, now put it down and come inside for dinner"? Did you take the time to truely appreciate the thought behind the act? That the child thought of you when they saw the flower, thought of how much you would like the smell, the color and then decided to pluck it from the earth to show you just exactly how much you mean to them. Did you just blow them off?
In a world were divorce is at a record high, are we seeing the little things that our spouses do for us? Can we not see them because we choose not to, becuase we expect them to be done, or is it because we simply don't speak the same love language? How much does it mean to you that your spouse asks you how your day was? Or when was the last time you fixed your spouse's favorite meal, just because you wanted to show them how much you love them? And did that spouse even notice your effort? When was the last time you called your spouse on your lunch hour just to say 'hello' or 'I love you'? When was the last time that they did that for you?
We need to stop and realize that the little things happen around us everyday, we realize how rich we truely are in life. When we truely see the little things in life, we appreciate them all the more.
