range of materials used for making sneakers continues to expand, but as a rule of thumb treat them the same way you would clothes. You would wash a delicate material in lighter setting on your washing machine, or hand wash it gently without too much scrubbing. The same principles apply.
If you're worried about ruining your favorite sneakers made out of some funky new material that isn't usually on shoes (I've seen sneakers covered in horse hair), bring them to a dry cleaner. Most dry cleaners clean sneakers and do a pretty good job of it. If you can't get them as clean as you'd like on your own, bring them to a dry cleaner, it's cheap enough and worth the results. I have been charged anywhere from $10.00-$20.00 depending on where I go.
For stains that just won't come out on white OR colored sneakers, you can also try Spray and Wash or any stain treatment that you'll find in the laundry detergent aisle. MAKE SURE IT IS COLOR SAFE and intended for colored before you put it on any colored materials.
As an avid sneaker fanatic, and an obsessive compulsive when it comes to white sneakers, I can guarantee you that these are the best ways to clean and preserve your sneakers. Not only will they look brand new, but if you do it right they won't get worn out from cleaning.
