For many people, writing is a slow, painful process. It doesn't have to be, though. With a little guidance and a bit of practice, the situation can change. Writing can become a faster, painful process. Or, with luck, perhaps even the pain, too, will be lessened. All you need is a little PEP talk.
PEP is the key to writing both faster and better. It stands for: Preparation, Environment, and Practice.
Preparation
Proper preparation will give a big boost to your writing speed and quality.
Consider a class on exam day. The students who have prepared well speed through the test and also get good grades. Those who haven't prepared struggle to answer the questions, and the answers they give are often either clearly wrong or completely baffling to anyone trying to make sense of them.
The same is true for writing. Those who prepare well are able to write faster and more fluently. Those who don't prepare are destined for mediocrity and failure. Below are five tips for proper preparation.
1) Keep a journal
Often, writing is slow because you don't know what to write about, or can't think of specific examples to clarify the points you are trying to make. Keeping a journal is a great way to overcome these problems. Take a small notebook with you wherever you go to jot down bits of inspiration that come to mind, or interesting events that you witness throughout your day.
Regularly review your notes, looking for ideas to write about or colorful, concrete examples to spice up your writing.
2) Know your subject
To write faster, write about things you know.
Or, if you want to write about something you don't know, do your research first. Learn all you can about the subject before starting to write. The investment of time at the beginning of your writing project will be rewarded in the speed and quality of your writing.
3) Be derivative
Make the maximum use of your knowledge and research. Think of other articles to write on the similar topic. If you have just finished an article on training horses, why not write about grooming horses, preparing stables, or proper feeding of horses? In many cases, the only limitation to possible related topics is your imagination.
For derivative articles, much of the background information will be the same, which will save lots of time in both research and writing.
4) Plan
Know what you want to write before you begin. Make a roadmap (a.k.a. outline) of where you want to the article to go and the points that you hope to make along the way.
If you fail to plan, then
