Why coaching and mentoring helps at risk youth

Teens and other young people as they grow have risks that go with their growing up years. These risks include drug abuse, alcoholism, unwanted sex, crime, gang, uncontrolled emotions and self-esteem. As young people they easily get lured into having vice especially if they see their peers doing them. In the kind of society we are in today, the youth must be mentored in order for them to be away from bad vices. Young people want to experience something different. they could easily get into a bad vice when they have problems. In this case they need coaching and mentoring.

Mentoring the youth has been a long time practice. Its purpose is to teach the youth to keep away from bad influences around them. With the mentors help the youth could be guided to face different situations and to have self control and discipline so that they will not be easily lured into bad vices. Through mentoring, children are guided accordingly and are given mind enlightening situations which they could follow as they grow up. Here in the Philippines, there are many government and private programs centered on the youth. They are given free group mentoring specially in the slum areas where bad vices are rampant. The youth are mentored about the bad effects of vices. By mentoring them, they will less likely be influenced by the bad vices around them.

What keeps the youth from getting involved in the risks around them is through proper mentoring by adults. Young people would listen to older people provided they are guided properly and taught the right things to do.

Coaching is centered on training the youth while mentoring is counseling them. If these two are combined together as a method in approaching the at risk youth there is no reason why the youth will go the wrong way. No people are born evil and when children are mentored as early as possible, they would turn out as upright people when they grow up.

Mentoring and coaching is very important where the youth is concerned. Young people need someone to give them pieces of advice so that they will see and realize what is proper and what is not. If nobody will teach them what to do and how to behave then they will not know the difference. It is very important for them to have someone enlighten their mind and see the positive aspects of life rather than the negative. Mentors are there to guide them and train them in a manner acceptable in the society.

The number of youth who turn to bad vices like drug addiction, unwanted sex and crimes are becoming more as time goes and mentoring programs are pouring out in order to help the youth.
