Green Mother's Day gifts

by Lorelei Cohen

Most people view "Going Green" as being a complicated procedure but it is really just a matter of making a few simple alterations to your current lifestyle. Nothing traumatic, nothing disastrously difficult, just a few little adjustments in one's current behavior patterns to incorporate into your current lifestyle. Holidays for example can be environmental nightmares. There are generally a lot of areas that can be made to be a little or a lot greener on holidays. Even on a basic holiday like Mother's Day. The very choice of a gift for mom can be made to be an environmentally conscious decision.

So what exactly are some Green Mother's Day gift ideas for mom? There are so many wonderful Green Mother's Day gift ideas available that one of them is guaranteed to be the right one to delight your mom. Have you thought of picking your mom up an apple tree for Mother's Day? What about a cherry, plum, or lilac tree? All are wonderful environmentally friendly presents. Rather than purchasing mom a bouquets of flowers, instead purchase her a living gift of a miniature rose bush, potted mums, or some other flower which can later be transplanted into her flower bed and enjoyed for years to come.

If mom lives in an apartment or has limited yard space than the living gift of a bonsai tree or potted plant is always nice to receive. A potted plant such as an Aloe Vera plant which has very special health benefits within its fluid filled leaves is usually a very well received and much appreciated gift item. Another interesting gift plant is a decorative bamboo plant. Representing luck, the number of stalks in a lucky bamboo plant indicate the form of luck that the plant is supposed to bring. For example a bamboo plant with three stalks traditionally brings the three ingredients needed for a happy life: happiness, wealth and longevity. Most of these lucky bamboo plants come with a gift card stating the symbolic meaning of each specific plant.

Another truly nice gift idea is a decorative solar powered lighting fixture. These can be purchased specifically for indoor or outdoor use and are generally quite a novelty to receive. Many of these lights are very whimsical or romantic, they can be a statuette in the form of an angel or fairy that holds a solar powered light shaped as a bird or a butterfly within their hands. They can be styled like traditional household lamp or in very unique fiber optic type manner. If lighting isn't a gift that you had in mind for mom then you might want to take a look at any of the other many household appliances that are now powered through solar energy. Another great solar powered gift idea would be to buy mom her very own solar powered battery charger, or her very own solar powered water fountain for either her back yard or her solarium.

You could purchase mom a personalized Kitchen composter to help her discover the many benefits of turning her nutrient rich vegetable waste back into mineral rich soil. How about an old fashioned ice cream maker that uses crank power to allow mom to produce her own special ice cream sensations.

If mom is a bit of a health nut then perhaps the gift of a manual treadmill, skipping rope, Hula hoop or bicycle might be a welcome gift choice. Also don't forget about "Going Green" when it comes to wrapping your gift. Try to use items that can be reused or recycled for your gift wrapping needs. Take advantage of decorative tins, wooden boxes, cloth bags or ribbons for your gift giving needs. Remember that every little difference that you make does count!

It really is quite easy to "Go Green" and holidays are a great place to begin. It just takes a little creative thought and a small adjustment to your current pattern of living. The great thing about "Going Green" is that once you get started at it, it is actually quite fun, enjoy!
