Foods that may help boost brain power

Of all the organs in the body, the brain bears the most responsibility and works the hardest. Twenty four hours a day, even while we sleep, our brain is hard at work controlling everything from breathing to solving complex math problems, and ensuring the entire body system functions at peak performance. Performing so many duties, it requires fuel to run efficiently. Yes, even the brain requires proper nourishment, as it is vital to creative thought, memory, good mood and over all health. It is important to remember that everything you put in your mouth affects your thoughts, feelings and memory, so choosing foods that help boost brain power can give you a mental edge.

~ Wholegrain breads and cereals are a great brain stimulator due to their high amount of folate, which boosts blood flow to the brain. For optimal performance, our brain is dependent on adequate blood flow.

~ Wheat germ contains thiamine, which is proven to improve memory.

~ The high magnesium content in cashews opens up blood vessels. More oxygen rich blood flowing through the body results in better brain function.

~ Almonds are high in riboflavin, which boosts memory. They also contain phenylalanine. This stimulates the brain to produce natural mood boosting neurotransmitters, which do wonders for mental health.

~ Memory and brain development are aided by the choline present in pecans and peanuts.

~ The rich zinc content in pumpkin seeds plays a vital role in enhancing memory and thinking skills.

~ An important amino acid, called tryptophan, can be found in sunflower seeds. The brain converts this to serotonin as a natural way of relieving mild depression and insomnia. A high thiamine content helps increase memory and cognitive function.

~ Blueberries contain ellagic acid, which helps prevent cell damage and increases the rate of new cell production. They also have antioxidants that protect the brain from oxidative stress and may reduce the effects of conditions such as Alzheimer's and dementia.

~ Catechines contained in green tea enhance memory and focus, and help fight mental fatigue.

~ Lycopene, an antioxidant found in tomatoes, helps protect against cell damage from free radicals. This is believed to be a factor in dementia and Alzheimer's.

~ Broccoli, rich in vitamin K, enhances cognitive function and improves brain power.

~ When cooking eggplant be sure to leave the skin on. It contains nasunin, which enhances communication between brain cells and messenger molecules.

~ Dark chocolate contains natural stimulants that increase the production of endorphines while enhancing focus and concentration. Flavanoes facilitate blood supply to the brain and enhance cognitive skills.

~ Milk chocolate can improve visual and verbal memory.

The thought of food contributing to a boost in brain power is very intriguing. Do you suppose it can increase intelligence? Wouldn't it be great if you could eat your way to a genius level? Then chocolate could take the place of homework. Actually chocolate could replace everything that required thinking or learning, and I'd be one very happy woman.
