Recipes: Honey teriyaki sauce

When I want an Asian-inspired meal, I don't always call for take-out. With a simple honey teriyaki sauce, any meat or vegetable I have on hand can become something special. This recipe takes almost no time to put together and requires no cooking. Even new cooks can take advantage of the great flavors.

Honey Teriyaki Sauce

Ingredients:

1 cup honey
1 cup dark soy sauce

1 cup rice wine
1 garlic clove, minced
1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger root
1 teaspoon sesame oil

Directions:

1. Whisk ingredients together until thoroughly combined.

It can't get simpler than that! This recipe holds well in the refrigerator for up to a week, so you can use it on several different meals if you have a small family or want to use it as a condiment. One of my favorite uses for the sauce is a simple chicken and broccoli dish that is full of flavor and nutrition.

Teriyaki Chicken and Broccoli
Serves 4

Ingredients:

1 batch honey teriyaki sauce
1 Tbsp oil
1 1/2 pounds chicken breast
2 cups broccoli
1 large onion, sliced
1/4 cup water

Directions:

1. Cut chicken into bite-sized pieces.
2. Marinate in half the teriyaki sauce for 30 minutes.
3. Heat oil in large skillet.
4. Stir-fry chicken until cooked through. Remove from pan and set aside.
5. Add broccoli and onion to skillet. Cook for 1 minute.
6. Add water and cover for three minutes, until broccoli is slightly tender.
7. Return chicken to skillet, add remaining teriyaki sauce, and heat through.

This dish is wonderful served over brown rice. It is full of flavor and can be adapted for any taste. If you don't like broccoli, try substituting snow peas, carrots, bell peppers, or zucchini. Recipes are best when you make them your own!
