Mama Mia: The Film Not The Stage Show!
Mama Mia is a collaboration of theatre and ABBA songs, that has been carefully and thoughtfully adapted for film. With the play already a huge success, a lot was riding on whether the production would work as well on the screen as it clearly has in theaters world wide.
For those who have escaped the lure of the stage production so far here's a short summary of the plot: It tells the story of a young girl brought up by her single parent mother (Meryl Streep). On the days that lead up to the wedding of the young girl she discovers and reads her mother's diary, in the hope to find clues to the identity of her father. It turns out that there are three possible candidates, and unbeknown to the mother they are all invited to the wedding. The possible Father's are reunited with the Mother and the quest to find the real Father begins.
The great thing about this film is that, it's a film in its' own right, the directors have not attempted to make it exactly like the award winning stage show, so it offers new visuals to a very familiar plot. Meryl Streep is surprisingly, and unexpectedly good at delivering the high and powerful notes, which is a stark contrast to the somewhat forced tone that is present in the voice of Pierce Brosnan. Brosnan is ultimately remembered for his portrayal of James Bond, which unfortunately tainted the view of his role in this movie. Streep however is perfectly cast in this role, offering an earthy and comfortable tone which resonates throughout the duration of this motion picture.
The film is thoroughly uplifting and continues to keep you guessing throughout, both the dance choreography and the actors/actress showcase the spectrum of emotions found in ABBA's songs. Overall it is truly enjoyable watch and will definitely cater for both fans of the stage production, and those who have failed to be won over so far. It's guaranteed to have you humming along and toe tapping throughout.
Mamma Mia is a warmhearted feel-good movie that will not disappoint, and is a great film choice for all the family to enjoy. If you are not a fan of ABBA now, you most likely will be after viewing this, as it is hard to escape the grasps of the catchy lyrics and energetic dance routines that accompany them. A thoroughly good movie for a girls night in.
