Thoughts on the Chelsea vs. Manchester United aftermath

After the Chelsea loss against Manchester United in the Champions league final 2008 in May, the conclusions are clear. I beleive that both teams still are in a strong position to be challenging for top honours this season, however I believe the Chelsea have a much more solid base to continue to progress beyond Manchester United. Chelsea in the close summer season have had a new Manager Jose Felipe Scolari, and have brought in Jose Boswinga, and Deco. All of which are useful additions to the club. The departure of lesser players including Shevchenko, Khalid Boularouz also bring in valuable funds to the club.

Manchester United who are perhaps historically the most successful club in the English Premier division could have peaked in terms of form that can not be bettered. I think that Ronaldo early injury which saw him miss out the first three games during the new season is a setback to the club. In comparison Chelsea also have the setbacks of having Didier Drogba unfit at the moment and will also be able to benefit from his services soon. Whilst Manchester United have signed Dimitar Berbatov I feel that this is a bad signing as whilst he scores goals, he will do well after the new year. This is Berbatovs most likely better performance. I think that the player will get chances to play regularly after the new year. Also there is the problem of having too many quality players at United, and this will pose some difficulties for Alex Ferguson as to who does he select week in week out. There is Nani, Tevez, Ronaldo, Rooney, and Giggs who all occupy attacking midfield and striking positions. Who does Berbatov play with? will be the big question on Manchester United fans minds. I also think that Manchester United who are already some points behind Chelsea already in the premier division will also struggle to overhaul Chelsea this season if they fall too far behind. Also the position of Chelsea who have not lost at Stamford Bridge for close to 100 games will continue this season. Chelsea will also not have the same selection problems that Manchester United have as they can play with Drogba, Anelka, and Deco and be able to win games regularly.

The question is whilst Chelsea have falled second to Manchester United in the last two seasons, I feel that the situation and the tide will turn quickly in Chelsea's favour. The injuries and card situation over the year will also influence the title race to some extent, though I feel that Chelsea have that bit extra to fend off all Challengers.
