They stood in silence at the doorstep to her house. Even birds seemed to know better than to chirp on that dreadful day.
He studied her face, full of distress, and nearly drowned in her gray eyes. She looked down and her expression grew bitter, her lips curling in a scowl. She frowned and again her expression changed, becoming sad and pained, her eyes growing bigger than ever. The watery look she gave her bare feet send chills down his back. He rubbed the length of his arms, her concerns reflecting in his frown. He wondered if he should say something. But what was there to say?
He knew just as well as her this was because of Jake, the boy she was still in love with. For a moment he regretted being her best friend, knowing a girl would know how to cheer her up. He wished he'd never made up those lies, that he'd had told her the truth. Right away, though, he felt bad of thinking of himself at such a moment. He silently gathered her in a strong hug, letting her weep in his shirt.
"I'm torn Steve..." she whispered as he held her.
"He has to leave." he whispered back, resting his head on hers, "And I must stay put." he added cautiously. She gave a soft whimper.
"How can I leave you? You're like a brother to me! I won't last a day without you..." her voice was muffled as she pressed her face tighter to his chest. She considered hammering his shoulders for not coming with her but her arm caught in mid air as she remembered all the things he's done for her.
He gently kissed the top of her head. She looked up, her cheeks streaked with tears and make-up, her eyes puffy from crying, and to him she couldn't have been more beautiful. He kissed her then on the lips, softly and carefully, not sure of his reaction. She pulled away quickly and struggled free out of his embrace.
"Why...why did you do that? You told me...you weren't into girls..." she gasped surprised, chocking out the words through violent sobs.
"I...I lied so you would be my friend. I've kept the secret up for all four years. It was hard for-"
"You lied to me?" her voice was small as she cut him off. "All you said about the difficulty of being a guy who was...gay...in this sea of other guys was...a lie?" she broke down again and had to lean against the side of the house for support.
"I'm sorry. I knew you would have never told me the stuff you did if you knew I was...straight. It was wrong of me. Can you forgive me?" he glanced at her, trying to read her pained face.
"How can I ever trust you again? You made me believe
