Why military intervention in Darfur, Sudan would be a more noble cause than the Iraq War

There is a genocide going on in the Sudanese region of Africa. Who can blame you if you don't know anything or much about it, The American media is more consumed with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' firstborn than this mass murder that is occurring on the earth's soil.

There is little hope.

Here's a simple explanation of what is happening in Darfur. Darfur is about the size of Texas and is a part of the largest country in Africa. For decades, Darfur's government neglected and oppressed many. Rebel groups began to fight back against the central government. These rebel groups represented the heart of Darfur which were non-Arab black African farmers from various tribal backgrounds. The government helped assemble a militia group called the Janjaweed, composed mostly of Arab African Muslims. The Janjaweed systematically murdered, raped and tortured hundreds of thousands of civilians. In addition, they have wiped out entire villages and destroyed food and water supplies.

To date, over 500,000 Africans have been murdered due to ethnic cleansing and over 2.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes. To make matters worse, President Bush and the United States congress have labeled the current atrocities in Darfur as genocide. And, not much has been done since. Below are five reasons why Americans should be outraged about the tragedy in Darfur.

1. Religious
A man once told me that we should take care of our home before we go over to other countries to try and save them. I agree with him to some extent, but not when it comes to genocide. Ironically, this man is Jewish and a Holocaust survivor. As smart as he is, he just may be wrong in this instance. We are our brother's keeper and I'm confident that somewhere in the Old Testament, where both Jews and Gentiles agree, you can find a whiff of that concept.

2. Financial
Much of our money, 401K's, bank investments, etc are going to the government of Darfur to support this genocide. According to Save Darfur, a national campaign called Divest for Darfur has been started. This campaign encourages the following investment firms to stop funding the genocide in Darfur.
JP Morgan
Franklin Templeton
Fidelity Investments
Capital Group/American Funds
Vanguard
Many people are unaware that their savings is invested in companies that are helping to fund this mass murder. By taking money out of these funds, it leaves the guilty investment firms unable to pay for the guns and military to support the genocide.

3. Moral
What's right is right
