One of the most beneficial foods for boosting brain power is considered to be the humble, yet underestimated, blueberry.
Not only is this a food that is easy to obtain year-round, this is a food that is palatable to most people, as well as attractive in appearance. This food is tasty without any added sugar, and it makes a fine finger food and snack food for young children, as well as a working adult who wants to pack some "brain food" in their daily bag lunch.
I recently read an article about a prominent neuroscientist who eats a cupful of blueberries every morning for breakfast. The reason he does this is because he, of all people, understands the brain benefits that are acquired from ingesting this simple fruit. It is claimed that blueberries can increase the ability of neurons to communicate. Blueberries are said to enhance and increase the speed with which the neurons fire, as well. Blueberries are powerful antioxidants, and they contain significant amounts of vitamin C.
Blueberries can also assist in preventing memory loss; something that is becoming more and more of a concern in this modern age. They have anti-aging components, and the extract of blueberries has also been shown to slow down visual loss. Blueberries have been found to improve "balance, coordination and memory."
The blueberry has even been considered to have an anti-aging effect on appearance, and in conjunction with some other foods that I will mention in a moment, it can have a remarkably smoothing effect on a person's skin appearance. This is of immense interest to a woman who wants a lovely appearance without an over-application of cosmetics of any kind.
I eat blueberries (and many other berries) often for breakfast, and here is a simple, tasty way to get their benefits:
Place approximately a cup of blueberries (fresh or unsweetened - thawed from the freezer) in a small bowl. Add a little fresh ginger or cinnamon, along with some fresh, unsweetened organic coconut. Throw in a few fresh, organic walnuts or almonds and stir this together. One of the benefits of eating blueberries with these nuts is that there is supposed to be a "synergistic effect" on the brain when these foods are consumed together. (You can add a little organic yogurt, and this is a tasty, fresh, and very nourishing breakfast.) If you take time to really savor the flavor of this, you will find this is a highly satisfying breakfast, and it surpasses any sugared cereal I have ever tasted! Please, read the article mentioned
