Song reviews: Take You Down, by Chris Brown

"Take You Down" is a track taken from the second Chris Brown studio album "Exclusive"; it is the fourth released single from the album and shows Chris Brown to have a very nice recording voice. The track is pleasant; the vocals well sung out and the instrumental side of things always kept incredibly simple; it's an okay track, not hugely hard hitting however and there is little here to separate Chris Brown from those that have come before.

When listening to "Take You Down" it is incredibly easy to make comparisons to the likes of Prince and R Kelly. Chris Brown's voice is not particularly original and although there is no denying that he's a very good singer; there's nothing that really makes his voice stand out. When listening to "Take You Down" you get the distinct impression that it easily could have been recorded by a number of others to equal/greater effect; it's not a bad track but there are a lot of people out there with similar voices to that of Chris Brown, artists that are in fact doing this whole sound a lot better too.

Lyrically the track is all about Chris Brown's strong sexual attraction to his girlfriend, this is something that comes across all the way through the track and is always put across within the lyrics that have here been spoken. The track is not explicit as some can be, there's definitely a strong sexual suggestion however and this is most definitely the main theme of the track.

Chris Brown has a fan base of many, his music is light and approachable and he's also very nice to look at. He's a smooth character, his songs flow well, vocally he's nothing particularly special however and although he does have a decent enough voice there is really no separating him from many others of a similar sort.

Chris Brown possesses a pleasant R&B style, his "Take You Down" track peaked at number 43 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and it also hit a high of number 4 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. It's not a bad track and has been moderately successful for Chris Brown; he's had better success than this however and I do not feel that "Take You Down" is one of Chris Brown's better tracks. It's not bad and as ever his vocals still sit well and always are highly tuneful; it's nothing particularly groundbreaking however and were I to hear this on the radio for the first time then I certainly wouldn't know straight away that is was Chris Brown that was singing.

I have in the past really quite enjoyed a number of Chris Brown tracks and I must admit that I do find "Take You Down" to be a very pleasant track to listen to; nothing special however and certainly this is not a display of Chris Brown at his very best. Chris Brown will surely still be a teenage heartthrob for many more years to come, he has his moments of R&B gold but I do not feel that "Take You Down" is one of them. "Take You Down" is not a bad R&B track and if you're looking for a smooth flow and decent vocal style then the track can most definitely provide this; it's not particularly original however and if you're after something just a little bit different then I'd probably advise that you look elsewhere.

There is no doubt in my mind that Chris Brown is a supremely talented artist, his talent may not be best showcased at it's very finest here but don't let this put you off. Chris Brown is very good at what he does, unoriginal and perhaps not the best in the genre; still worth listening to however if you do like to listen to a good bit of R&B from time to time.
