The nutritional value of iceberg lettuce

A wise adage tells us not to judge a book by its cover'. To paraphrase this statement, I would say; don't judge a vegetable by its humble appearance'. This statement is particularly relevant to the common iceberg lettuce.

You are probably used to seeing the iceberg lettuce in your salad or sandwich. For this reason, you may simply under estimate this very useful vegetable. You may also belong to the category of those who feel that the iceberg lettuce is not really a bona fide food in its own right. You may not know this but the iceberg lettuce contains a lot of nutritional benefits some of which include the following:

1. Contains Vitamins A:
The iceberg lettuce contains very useful doses of Vitamin A. we all know how vital this Vitamin is. We also know how fragile this Vitamin is. Well,the beauty of the iceberg lettuce in this regard is that it is usually eaten raw. As a result, there is no risk of destroying the Vitamin A contained in the iceberg lettuce by the process of cooking.

2 Contains Water:
One good thing about the iceberg lettuce is that is contains water. This helps the digestion process and also cleanses your system. So, the iceberg lettuce can help to rid your system of toxins. It is also a fact that, because it contains water, the iceberg lettuce can also serve as a natural laxative. Now, this is simply great news for those that are usually afflicted by constipation. Still on the issue of water, the iceberg lettuce also serves to cleanse your skin, and re-hydrate your skin.

3. Contains Folic Acid:
The iceberg lettuce is just great for pregnant women. It contains folic acid which is required by pregnant women. More to the point, it does not contain fat and does not contain cholesterol. So, it is also great for those who are watching their weight.

4. Contains Dietary Fiber:
In these days of junk food and processed foods, the iceberg lettuce is great in one respect. It contains dietary fiber and, more to the point, it is purely natural. Consequently, it aids bowel movement naturally and even protects you from colon cancer. So, if you are having a running battle with constipation, throw out your laxatives and solve the problem with the humble but effective iceberg lettuce.

5. Good for Your Breath:
Apart from being very good for your bowels, the iceberg lettuce is also good for your dental system. The water in it cleanses your mouth and washes off food particles to freshen your breath and makes you have a confident smile.

Finally, the iceberg lettuce can be considered a team player. This is because it combines very well with other vegetables to give you great tasting and nutritious salads.I would also have to point out a very obvious fact here.Like most vegetables, the darker the iceberg lettuce is, the more nutritious it is likely to be. Besides, since it is affected by heat and sunlight, it makes a lot of sense to eat your lettuce fresh.This is how to get the maximum benefit out of the iceberg lettuce.

So, if you had been ignorant of the very nutritional values of the iceberg lettuce before, now you can have some enlightenment. The iceberg lettuce is great for you, so don't go around under estimating this great vegetable any longer.
