Guide to the characters of The Simpsons

by Isabella Pastora

Created on: September 18, 2008

I, like so many others, have loved "The Simpson's" since before it was its own television show. Set in the fictional town of Springfield, the writers have created a complete and complex community filled with a variety of characters. The main focus of the show is, of course, the Simpson family, which are the characters I will focus on.

Homer Simpson- Homer is the patriarch of the family, having married Marge after she became pregnant with their first child, Bart. The couple has two more children, a fact Homer constantly overlooks, forgetting his youngest, Maggie, even exists. (Maggie has intervened and saved his countless times) Homer often neglects his children and takes his wife for granted, despite the fact that he genuinely loves both her and his kids. He does not like to see his family insulted or hurt.

Homer works in the town's Nuclear Power Plant as a safety technician, a job he is grossly unqualified for. He is often seen playing hooky, which may not be a bad thing since he spends most of his work time napping or eating. Homer has, on occasion, taken other jobs, such as ambulance driver, astronaut, and barbershop quartet singer to name a few.

Homer is an alcoholic and an over eater, with many other bad habits. Homer spends most of his free time at a local bar, Moe's, owned by his friend Moe Sczylak and frequented by his childhood friends, Barney Gumble, Carl Carlson and Lenny.

Marge Simpson- Marge is Homer's loving wife, who, despite the way she's treated, still
sees him as a good provider and father. She has left Homer a few times, but she always forgives him and takes him back. Marge loves her three children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie very much, and has a very strong bond with Maggie, her youngest. She also has a soft spot for her "little-bitty-barty", whom she forgives for just about everything. She has two older sisters, Patty and Selma, twins.

Though she doesn't like to rock the boat and is often encouraging her daughter Lisa to go with the crowd, she has, from time to time, been a crusader, standing up against cartoon violence, resulting in the cancellation of her children's favorite cartoon as well as having sugar banned from Springfield. Marge is a housewife, although she has taken a few jobs: secretary at the Nuclear Plant, police officer and pretzel maker. Marge has taken a vacation from her normal, docile self and has had bouts with steroids, road rage and gambling. (an addiction she has not overcome)

Bart Simpson- Bart is the first child of Homer and
