arrange, and retrieve what they want. If you purchase a sturdy bookcase, it could last many years, even into the college years.
Bulletin board: Kids love to display their art, pictures of their friends, families, heroes, and pets. They have schedules and reminders, too. So a big bulletin board is very useful. Making a fabric-covered bulletin board is another way to add interest and color to a room without spending much money. It's also quite easy and something you could make with your child.
Lighting: Children need a good reading lamp by the bed and on their desk. There should also be good overhead lighting. Consider decorating a lampshade to support your theme by stencilling, gluing on ribbons and buttons, punching patterns of holes...whatever you can imagine.
Flooring: Solid surface floors such as wood or tile are ideal since they are easy to clean. But you will probably want to have some type of area rug. Try to find one you can throw in the wash. If you need a big area rug, you could attach several smaller rugs together and then just detach them when they need cleaning. Something multicolored will help you hide spills and lint better than a solid colored rug.
Fabric elements: Bedspreads, curtains, and pillows should be durable and washable. Kids will get all manner of stains on their bedspreads: food, juice, magic markers, crayon, dirt. A kid's room is nowhere to put an heirloom quality quilt. Get something fun and practical and spray some scotchguarding on it, if necessary. It's also helpful to have bedspreads that are reversible.
Work surface: Kids need big surfaces for doing art and craft projects, doing homework, playing games, putting together puzzles, having tea parties, and displaying more of their valuable stuff. A big desk is great, but also think about folding tables, tables on casters that can be rolled around the room, and tables with easily washable surfaces.
When you are finished decorating your child's room, you want it to be so wonderful that your child will want to go there for a time out, will prefer it to your room, and will happily give you a few moments of peace and quiet. You want them to remember it when they have kids and fondly recall all the love you put into making it a special place for them.
