Tips for staying healthy at work

With the flu season upon us, it is important to follow some simple strategies to remain healthy whether we are at home, in public or at work. These tips to stay healthier should be applied wherever you are.

1) Wash hands frequently. Germs are carried on objects and on hands. Be sure to use warm water and soap and to cleanse for at least 20 seconds before drying. Wash hands after restroom use, after shaking hands, after coming home from the store, before eating a snack or meal. Anytime you are not in your own environment. If you are unable to wash hands, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to cleanse them. Be sure to wash in between fingers and to dry completely.

2) Avoid direct contact with sick coworkers. Too often coworkers are coming into work sick. They would rather save their sick leave to do fun things. I am not above covering my nose with my shirt if I have to be around someone sick.

3) Wipe down surfaces that you are in contact with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Wipe the phone, your chair arms, keyboard, and desk. Germs live on objects so, sanitizing your area is important.

4) Do not borrow items from coworkers. Once again objects can carry germs, use your own tools whether it be a pen or a hammer.

5) Sneeze or cough into the crook of your arm. This is better then using your hand which acts as a transmitter for germs.

6) Build your immunity. Be sure and have breakfast to jump start your day, ideally with yogurt to help combat bad bacteria. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables to help build your immune system. Exercise and get regular sleep. If your place of business offers a gym or exercise classes, take advantage of it.

7) Alleviate stress. Try to not get personally involved, this is just a job. Stress can wear down your immunity. I am not saying do not care but do not internal work situations and make your self feel bad and vulnerable to illness.

8) Do not touch your face. Besides breathing in germs the only other way you come into contact with them is by putting your objects or fingers into orifices on your face. Keep hands and objects out of eyes, nose and mouth!

9) Get a flu shot. Many business offer flu shots at a reduced rate to employees, take advantage of it. If your work does not offer any, check with your local drug store or grocery store, many offer flu shot clinics for about $25.00.

So this season and all year long, follow the tips above for healthy living no matter where you are, be it at work, at the doctors office, the grocery store, day care or the bank Germs are no choosey and will survive most anywhere.
