make a lot of money from it. Not so. Very often, the only value of a blue, purple or gold weapon is in the mods that you can salvage off them: fiery bow strings, staff wrappings that give extra HP etc. People will pay good money for unidentified golds though, as they can get a game title through that.
The best weapon is one that does maximum damage for a skill requirement of 9. There are collectors dotted through all the games that will give you such a weapon in return for some item they need, usually five of them. You can add your salvaged upgrades to these to improve them.
Maximum damage is 6-28 for axe, 15-28 for bows, 7-17 for daggers, 19-35 for hammers, 9-41 for a scythe, 14-27 for a spear, 15-22 for a sword and 11-22 for a wand or staff.
Good mods are those that give a 20% chance of something happening, +30 health, +5 armour or +5 energy. If your precious gold weapon doesn't meet those specs, it's not that great. In game though, many people judge a weapon by its skin. So a unique or rare skin could be worth a lot.
Green weapons always have maximum damage, req 9 and the best mods. Plus, they mostly have attractive skins as well. But don't be blinded by the green: check that the weapon does what you want before you spend the money on it.

This answer depends partly on what characters you have now. In broad strokes, you get fighters and spellcasters. The fighters include warrior, dervish, assassin, ranger and paragon. Spellcasters are the necromancer, elementalist, monk, ritualist and mesmer.
If you like playing one broad class in particular, then choose another profession from that broad class. If you feel like trying something different, then choose a profession from the other class.
As far as fighters go, warriors, dervish and assassins are up close and personal. Rangers and paragons tend to stand back from the main fight. So again, do you want the same kind of thing with a different flavour, or do you want a different style entirely? Warriors use a lot of adrenalin to fight, and learning to manage adrenalin is fun. The Dervish Avatars are really cool. Assassins use chained attacks, and need to learn how to target one enemy then leap out to the backlines. If you like a challenge, play assassin. The ranger is also an attacking class, though from a distance. The paragon, despite his armour, is more of a supporter, mostly boosting the party.
The spellcasters group into mass damage over an area, targetted damage or support. For mass
