One of the best westerns of all time is Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. It was first shown on October 24, 1969. It was nominated for several academy awards including best picture and best director. It won the academy award for best song with "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head". It is a very entertaining song. Butch Cassidy is the outlaw Robert Leroy Parker and the Sundance Kid is the outlaw Harry Longbaugh. Paul Newman is Butch Cassidy and Robert Redford is the Sundance Kid. It is one of Robert Redford's first films. It was written by William Goldman. They hold up several banks in the movie, usually killing everyone in sight with their guns. They finally are caught in Bolivia.
Another great western is Gunfight at OK Corral, first shown on January 1, 1957. It stars Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday, Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp, and Dennis Hopper as Billy The Kid. There are several other movies that are about the gunfight at OK Corral, including Tombstone, Wyatt Earp, and Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid. Tombstone stars Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday and Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp. Thomas Haden Church is Billy The Kid. Kevin Costner is Wyatt Earp in the movie Wyatt Earp, Dennis Quaid is Doc Holliday, and Tom Sizemore is Bat Masterson. It was first shown in 1994. It won an academy award for best cinematography. In Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid, James Coburn is Pat Garrett and Kris Kristofferson is Billy The Kid. It was first shown in 1973. The movies do not agree as to how The Clantons were killed. Was it a gun battle against Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and a few others? Or, did Pat Garrett ambush him at a cabin he was in?
In 1960 the two great westerns The Alamo and The Magnificent Seven appeared. The Alamo stars John Wayne and is about the battle of the Alamo in 1836 for Texan Independence. John Wayne is Davy Crockett, Richard Widmark is Jim Bowie, and Laurence Harvey is Colonel William Travis. The Alamo has gun battle after gun battle with Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie holding off Santa Ana's troops from the Alamo church remade into a fort. It is a must for anyone who likes gun battles against an outnumbered army. They lose in the end, though.
The Magnificent Seven is a fictional story about a band of seven men who help protect a Mexican village from an outlaw named Calvera (Eli Wallach) and his gang. Chris Adams is the leader, played by Yul Brynner. Steve McQueen is Vin, Charles Bronson is Bernardo
