Why travel insurance is important

Imagine spending months, even years, planning your dream vacation. Once you arrive at your destination, you find out that your luggage is nowhere to be found, your hotel reservation has been lost, and any side trips have been canceled. Whether you're on vacation for business or pleasure, having your vacation plans fall to the wayside after meticulous planning can be not only stressful, but often times heartbreaking.

Most basic travel insurance will offer you coverage for cancellations due to illness, death and emergencies while you're at home or abroad. Additional medical travel insurance is extremely useful if you plan on traveling to underdeveloped countries or for travelers with ongoing illness that might require some form of medical attention while away. These types of policies will usually reimburse you for the cost of visiting doctors and any medication you may need while traveling.

If you're planning on taking any additional equipment with you, such as photography gear, sporting items such as golf clubs or snorkeling equipment, or if you're plan on taking part in any dangerous activities such as bungee jumping or para gliding, you want to make sure you notify your insurer to make sure you and your equipment are fully covered.

There are some other extras you can purchase for your travel insurance policy as well. Some may cover non-refundable airline tickets which would help if your trip has to be canceled for a number of reasons. No matter what coverage you go with, it's important to check to see exactly what the insurance provider covers. Some policies vary significantly, and you don't want to find yourself in a predicament where you thought you're covered, but you're not.

So where do you start your search for travel insurance? If you're like most travelers and pay for your trip with a credit card, your credit card company will give you the option of travel insurance through them. Also, most travel agencies and airlines will offer various insurance options.

Be sure to research and choose your insurance company wisely. Any travel insurance company should have a 24-hour hotline that will be able to help you wherever you are. Find the best company that can fulfill your requirements. Ask a lot of questions, especially as to what is covered and what is not.

Many people believe travel insurance is too costly, too time consuming, and a waste of money. But factor in all the possible headaches and lost time you'll find yourself dealing with if your dream vacation goes haywire. It's easy to find great coverage at a great rate for your next vacation. And when you do, you'll rest easy knowing that any unexpected emergency or cancellation will be covered. So sit back and enjoy your vacation.
