Car reviews: 2009 BMW 7 Series

BMW's 2009 7 series is all about luxury, grace, and fuel efficiency. A touch of refining in the front-end styling, an elegant remake of some of the body contours, and a long list of fuel efficient redesign advancements.

The 750 models will be sporting the twin-turbo 4.4-liter, 400-hp V8 that debuted in the 6X. The 4.4 has more power than last years 4.8 and more torque than the V-12 that is now in the 2008 760Li. BMW is staying with the 6-speed automatic transmission, but the electronic column-mounted shifter is replaced with a console-mounted joystick style selector. Stop-and-go traffic will never be an issue again as the active cruise control can now come to complete stop without needing to be reset.

Every new BMW has made improvements to the once perplexing iDrive system. The 7 series is no exception and includes a 10.8-inch high-definition central display available with a side-view camera system with parking distance control to assist in close area maneuverability, a night vision system now with pedestrian detection, a blind-spot warning system, and a camera that detects speed limit signs and displays them to the driver. There is also an electronic owner's manual that includes animations and slide shows, viewable on the display, which are much easier to understand than printed instructions.

BMW engineers have even endeavored to attain a solution to the stress that builds up while sitting in traffic by adding ventilated seats that offer a relaxing massage. You will be able to listen to more of your favorite music as the hard drive now has 40GB of storage and the climate control is set individually in all four zones. Luxury at it's most personal level.

New for the sport package in 2009 is the Integral Active steering which allows for speed-sensitive rear-wheel steering for parallel parking and close maneuvering. There is a new Driving Dynamics Control, with the selector located on the console, which enables the driver to choose between Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Sport Plus settings, each with its own distinctive ride and responses.

The class and comforts that we have come to expect, the features and upgrades that we admire, and the economic responsibility that is required in today's marketplace; can all be found in one place, the new 2009 BMW 7 series, a more efficient, luxurious, and exciting driving experience.
