To the majority of women who MUST have a Coach handbag, all I can ask is this: "Why would you buy a bag that costs more than the money you are going to be carrying IN it?"

In today's modern society, we are awash in images that tell us how we need to look - including the clothes we should wear and the accessories that we should use. Many women feel they have a need - and a right, for some reason - to be dressed and accessorized just like the latest hot starlet in Hollywood. My take on this issue is that, unless you ARE a Hollywood star, perhaps you should stop trying to PRETEND you are. It used to be that stars had a higher standard of living because they earned a far higher wage and could afford the "finer" things in life. With the explosion of ill-managed credit in the hands of the general populace, anyone can live the Good Life - and pay for it later (maybe) or just file for bankruptcy. You get to keep your stuff - and the 7 year penalty of no access to credit seems to be a small price to pay in the minds of some people. At least they got their stuff and can make some sort of (errant) impression on others!

And these impressions we make on each other are OH so important. NOT.

The thing is, I don't care if that bag is made from the skins of exotic creatures raised by hand by Australian Aborigines, and sewn by hand by Tibetan Monks while chanting mantras for my continued long life and prosperity. It is still just a BAG. I have a leather purse with fine stitching, for which I paid less than $10 at a local superstore two years ago. I love it. And I loved the price. I do not have such a self-esteem issue that I need a purse with a certain large badge on it to prove my worth to the world. I don't need people to say, "OOOhhh.. look at HER! She must be a person of HIGH CALIBER to have such a magnificent handbag!" What I need is a bag to carry all my stuff so that I may function in my life.

Isn't that the reason the bag was invented in the first place?!

For the retail price of a Coach bag, a person could probably create seeming prosperity for an entire village of starving people in Africa. For the retail price of a Coach bag, someone could donate a significant amount towards disaster relief. For the retail price of a Coach bag, one could pay a month's worth of medical insurance, a car payment, half a month's rent on a modest place to live. You could save a homeless person's life with the cost of a Coach bag. You could adopt a half dozen homeless animals from a local shelter, you could buy supplies for an entire classroom of kids, you could buy groceries for a couple of weeks for a family of five. Three hundred dollars is a nice start for a bank account for your kids, a new wardrobe for school, a repair on the car.

Three hundred dollars has saved MY life more than once.

Though Coach bags are nice, to be sure, they are not some product that so outshines ALL the rest so as to make it worth its price. Maybe if it performed functions like balancing your checkbook for you or delivering a shock to you when you were getting ready to spend an exorbitant amount of money on a completely unnecessary item - THEN it might be worth somewhere near its market value. MAYBE.
