There is a growing need for daycare centers across the country. With so many families looking to supplement their incomes, in order to make ends meet, many mothers are finding it a necessity to go back into the workforce shortly after starting their own families. This means that they will need someone to look after their children while they are going back to work.
When there is a demand for a certain product or service, it makes for the perfect opportunity for the business entrepreneur. There is definitely a growing demand for good, quality day care centers, and this would make the ideal business for someone wanting to consider such a venture for themselves.
However, there is a little more to starting up your own child care business than just having the desire or need for an income yourself, or because you enjoy being around children. There are several things one must look into first.
THE LEGALITIES OF OPERATING A DAYCARE BUSINESS IN YOUR HOME
1) The first thing you will have to consider, is licensing your day care center. All cities require that any business be licensed. This is a way for them to keep track of all businesses that are operating within the city. It also ensures that each level of government is receiving taxes due.
2) You will also have to be bondable. This means that you cannot have a criminal record.
3) You may be required to offer a home inspection. This is to ensure that your home is in fact a safe environment for children. You will also be informed as to how many children your home is suited for, depending upon the square footage of your home.
4) There will need to be safety inspections, such as having the right amount of smoke detectors (and ensuring that they are all operable), fire escape passages, home and yard safety, etc.
5) Keep all insurance policies paid and up to date. Unfortunately, accidents can occur, especially where young children are concerned. Should a parent find you negligent in any way, you might find yourself facing a lawsuit.
6) Depending upon how many children are in your care, you might have to consider hiring staff. This means that you will have to be knowledgeable in payrolls and deductions.
7) Be sure to keep all your receipts for the business expenses, filed separately from your personal expenses. Certain items are tax deductible if they are used "for" the specific purpose of caring for children.
