Comic book recommendations for people who don't like comic books

Recently I loaned a copy of Identity Crisis to my mother on the off chance that she might enjoy it. She's always liked a good mystery story and I'm always looking for new people to reel into reading comics. She loved it. I began the task of introducing her to new series' and characters through mini series' and stories not steeped in continuity. While doing this I compiled a list of new reader friendly titles that most non comic book readers would enjoy.

I tried to diverge from your typical list of this kind by not including Alan Moore's Watchmen, or Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns, as they usually are a given in this sort of thing. What follows are mostly superhero titles and while I feel compelled to apologize for that fact I am reminded that comics probably wouldn't even exist without our spandex and capes.

Identity Crisis: Perhaps it's because writer Brad Meltzer comes to comics from writing mystery novels but IC makes a great introduction to the DCU. The story is sweeping, while not being weighed down in confusing continuity and the emotional stakes are high enough that most of the wacky sci-fi elements can be overlooked. If you're trying to get someone into reading mainstream comic books this is a great place to start them off at.

Marvels: Basically an overview of the Marvel Universe seen through the eyes of its ordinary citizens. This is a fantastically written and beautifully painted book that (to a person new to graphic storytelling) is shocking in its depth, and a visual treat.

Spider-Man Blue: Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale have created a graphic novel masterwork and Sale's retro style brings innocence to the story while Loeb's writing doesn't skimp on emotion and heart. This is a great book to give to young adults.

Kingdom Come: Painted by Marvels' Alex Ross and written by Mark Waid Kingdom Come reads like Greek mythology. The fantastic work of Alex Ross once again adds an air of importance to the work and Mark Waid writes an epic, heart wrenching story.

Astro City: Once again, Alex Ross handles some of the artistic duties on this series (as its cover artists and designer) and Marvels' Kurt Busiek punches the keys. Astro City bares many similarities to Marvels but set in a universe all its own. For someone looking to learn more about the mythology inherent in the idea of a superhero this is the place to start.

The Goon: Wildly imaginative, somewhat crude, raucously funny, and visually unique the Goon is a book for people who like zombie movies, Raymond Chandler novels, and the Sunday funnies. Written and drawn by Eric Powell, displaying ever expanding emotional range as it goes on the Goon now encompasses a deep mythology all it's own. If possible, start new readers off on The Goon: Fancy Pants Edition. It boils down all the lead character's continuity into one perfectly flowing story. Follow that up with The Goon: Chinatown, a story that hits with an unexpected emotional gut punch.

Bone: Writer/Arist Jeff Smith brings a story that is suitable for children, and enjoyable for adults. Like the best Disney cartoon never made Bone is simplistic, epic, humorous, and fun loving, and filled with loveable characters. It's also one of the best graphic novels ever written. A must have for anyone of any age who likes fantasy or adventure stories.
