Automotive history: Volkswagen Beetle

by JC Campbell

The popularity of the Volkswagen Beeetle in decades past is not surprising when you consider the background to the car and the purpose of its creation. Economy was the big selling point for the vehicle as a car that was competitively priced and was also economical to drive. The unique shape of the car was one that made it instantly recognizable on the road and it is no wonder it was one of the most widely owned car, especially in the 1970s at the height of its popularity.

The Volkswagen Beetle was originally an economy car devised in the 1930s by the Third Reich and literally means "People's Car". The concept was to make an economic car available to the masses and the Volkswagen was the result. Since then it has become a regular sight around the streets of the world and is still available albeit as an updated version.

The Beetle became extremely popular in the 1960s and 1970s as people realized this was a car that was very reliable and also very cost-effective. Many owners were able to keep their cars for more than a decade such was the reliability factor and of course many of them are still available for those who collect classic cars.

If you desire to become the new proud owner of this classic car, what you have to consider before you buy will be similar to buying any type of car. When purchasing something as important and as expensive as a car, you will no doubt want to give careful thought to a number of things before you part with your money.

COST
This is usually one of the first things we consider when buying a car and if it happens to be a vintage car, we will probably have to look even more closely at the price tag before we commit to buying. Because it is on old classic car, there are no standard prices as you would find for brand new cars. Generally, it should be possible to get some idea of what the cost will be for a specific classic car by doing some research online. The benefit of Internet search engines like google is that you can make a specific search on the car you hope to buy and this may give you some idea of how much similar cars sell for. Research will help you determine how much you should pay for the car in question.

CONDITION
It is crucial before buying a classic car to give it a full inspection. Perhaps you will do this personally or will arrange to take along a qualified mechanic who can check the car in a way you are not able to do. Although it is an older car, you will want to see that it has been kept in reasonable condition and that it has been maintained to level you are happy with. Never make a purchase without personally viewing the car as it may lead to disappointment. Some have purchased Volkswagen Beetles on the auction site Ebay and lived to regret it.

DOCUMENTS
Before concluding any deal with the current owner, make sure he has all the necessary documentation and that they have the right to sell the car. You might also want to ask for maintenance records if these are available. Not every classic car owner will have their car maintained by mechanics as tinkering with their pride and joy is one of the reasons they own it in the first place. Speaking with the owner personally will give you some insight as to how well he has cared for the car while in his possession. Whatever happens, do not hand over any money until you are certain the documentation is in order.

TEST DRIVE
One of the real tests of the condition of a classic car is how it drives. Ask the owner to take you for a test drive and try to drive the car yourself if this is possible. Seeing how it handles on the road will either fill you with confidence in making a purchase or convince you to leave well alone.

Buying a classic car is a bit different from buying a new car from a dealership. The key is to do your homework, inspect the car and its documentation and go for a test drive before parting with your hard-earned cash. A Volkswagen Beetle in good condition will be well worth the money you pay. The Beetle is one of those classic cars that people remember with fondness and is also one that will probably run efficiently in spite of the passing years.
