Nothing is filled with more ups and downs or emotion than teenage love. The teen years are when we first begin to see the opposite sex in a different light, and really take an interest in that magical word "dating." We learn so much about ourselves and the people around us during these times, as well as face a lot of hard times and create some memories we'll treasure forever. Poetry is a great way to deal with these times in our lives, whether they be good or bad. So what, exactly, makes a good teen love poem?
Really it depends on the audience. Obviously it's for a teenager, but in what context? Are you writing for teenagers to read? Are you yourself a teen writing to express emotions about your own relationships? Or are you writing a poem to another teenager to express your love? Each circumstance requires something slightly different.
1) Writing for Teens
Writing a poem for teenagers (assuming you yourself are not one) can be tricky. It's hard to remember what it feels like to go through the vicious dating cycle, especially if you're in a healthy relationship now. Don't talk down to your audience, or make it sound as if the world will end if the person you love doesn't share your feelings. The best teenage love poems simply admit to the confusion and pain of dating, and the hope that one day the right person will come along.
2) Writing for Yourself
There is really no wrong way to right poetry for yourself. If you've just gone through a bad relationship and want to express yourself, but aren't sure how, try free styling. Don't worry about rhyming, just write something that seems to have a rhythm when you read it in your mind. Be as explicit and mean as you want. This is about expressing how hurt you feel. It's fine to go over the top. Human emotions are meant to be felt to the fullest before we can let them go.
3) Writing a Love Poem for Someone
This is by far the hardest thing to do. What if you are rejected by the one you care about? It can be a horrible thing to think about. But most people, unless they are truly mean-spirited and not worth your time, will appreciate the gesture even if they don't share your feelings. And there's nothing that says love more than a poem. Keep it simple and try not to be overly mushy. Just tell them in a poetic way how you feel, or maybe keep it light and joking. Poetry is a great way to a girl's heart, and you never know what it might do for you.
