Cruises: American Safari's luxury cruise in Alaska

by Fred Tolleson

My personal best cruise is to Alaska! I really like the trip to the glaciers and the rest of the "big" country! Along with loving Alaska, I like the cruise liner business. Such a fine way to go anywhere! We have been to Panama, numerous Caribean, Central and South American ports on these luxury boats and it is out preferred way to go!

So what makes Alaska such a personal favorite? Many things! But to get more specific, lets talk about the ideal cruise to Alaska. You need to make reservations through the ships line or your travel agent, but one trip thru Alaska and you will be convinced:

1. Book yourself to fly to Alaska and stay in one of the Cruise Liner related resorts they maintain in Alaska. You can spend 1-3 weeks having a great time scouting around Denali Park or some other interesting aspects of Alaska. You can include everything from panning gold to watching bears fish!

2. The transportation around Alaska is in large nicely outfitted busses, or rail cars. You will get to see a lot of inland Alaska that you don't see on the standard 7 day cruise to the glaciers.

3. They usually have you join with a cruise somewhere around Anchorage. You will join a run from the south. Then you get to see both sets of glaciers, a lot of wild life and all of the Southeastern Alaska area.

I personally prefer Holland America and their somewhat smaller ships. It seems to me that the lodges, the ships, the personnel, all seem to fit together just a tad better than the rest. We have been to Alaska twice with them and really have enjoyed our experience.

Get yourself a new digital camera with lots of storage, so you can take 2-300 pictures and not worry about running out of memory. As the ship does its slow turnabout in front of the calving glaciers, you will want to get a lot of shots of this tremendous activity. The game along the entry and exit runs to the glaciers will be a high spot in your trip. Ever see a Bald Eagle up close enough to count feathers?

I would like to remind all that read this that cruising is the same, or a little less, than the daily expense of a road trip. AND you don't have the hassel of getting in and out of the car, motel room, and half a dozen restaurants each and every day. You won't really appreciate how much nicer it is to cruise than do a road trip until you have actually done it - so get your tickets and get going!
