"Growing up a Jehovah's Witness "or "Becoming one of Jehovah's Witnesses ", that is the question. I feel that becoming one of Jehovah's Witnesses applies to me better. Let me explain.
I have been surrounded by persons who serve Jehovah and some who do not. I had to decide for myself whether serving Jehovah would be the best choice in my life. I am still happy with my decision. I have benefitted from my service to Jehovah in more than one way.
I went thru my childhood going to the Kingdom Hall when my mother took us. As I got older, I began making arrangements to go if my mom didn't. As I got into my teen-age years, I took my relationship with Jehovah half-heartily. I began running around with another girl from the Hall. We didn't get into trouble at first, but our purpose was to try to have as much fun as possible without getting involved with others. I began to feel empty inside and regretted how we were acting. I told her I wanted to stop running around and take things more seriously. It wasn't long before she made the decision to move into a house with drug addicts and have a child out of wedlock. I shudder to think that could have been me living in a house full of people of questionable motives. The place was filthy too. I never thought she would allow herself to live like that.
I found that I was happier when I didn't let the personalities of others get to me. What they did or didn't do was between themselves and God. I wanted to be encouraged, so I needed to be encouraging as well. I tried to avoid gossip and still do to this day. Gossip is hurtful and I never want to be responsible for hurting another.
For a person to become one of Jehovah's Witnesses is similar to cooking in some aspects. Sounds unusual right? Cooking isn't something that you are born with. It is learned, perhaps from family members and appreciated by the cook himself. Like me, a person may have grown up in a household with family members who are either baptized Jehovah's Witnesses or associate with a particular congregation. Let me make it perfectly clear, a Jehovah's Witness is the name taken on by one who has dedicated themselves to do Jehovah's will and then shows it by public baptism. So one who only associates themselves with a congregation isn't actually one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Just like the serious cook, becoming one of Jehovah's Witnesses isn't a hobby, it isn't like a garment that you can cast off and put on. It should affect our goals, thoughts, lifestyle, or anything
