The top best friend movies of all time

by Volecia Plafcan

The first movie that comes to mind when I think of best friends is "My Girl". It is comical, sad, serious and the soundtrack is so appropriate and of course, sung by the Temptations.

It takes place in a small town in Pennsylvanie in 1971 and Vada (Anna Chlumsky) and Thomas J. (MacCauley Culkin) are best friends. I would say they are nine or ten years old.

Vada's dad is the local mortician and hasn't much time for Vada so she and Thomas J. pair up as best friends. Vada wears a mood ring that she is so fond of and Thomas J. knows this.

Jamie Lee Curtis comes to town and becomes Vada's dad, Harry (Dan Aykroyd)'s cosmetician for his funeral parlor. She lives in an RV in front of the house.

She and Vada become friends as Vada's mother has been gone for a long time and Vada has had no proper female attention other than her goofy grandmother's which is not saying much. I must say the grandmother's being in la la land is funny and adds laughter.

However, the friendship Vada and Thomas J. have is sincere and they grow to truly love each other. Vada falls for her poetry teacher and when she finds out he is engaged, she is devestated. She steals money from Jamie Lee to take a summer course so she can be around him.

When a bee hive comes alive with the bees, Thomas J. and Vada run. They are saved but Vada drops her mood ring and they know it is not safe to go back and get it.

Later, Thomas J. decides to go for the ring and does. He is stung by the bees and dies. Of course, he is brought to Vada's home (the mortuary).

This movie, in my opinion, is so poignant. I forget what it was like being that age or if I had to go through the same thing now, would I be able to?

Another movie that is so touching is "The Man in the Moon". I can't recall any of the actors other than Reese Witherspoon. She is the star and is thirteen at the time. She has an older sister who is seventeen.

A young man comes with his family to the adjoining farm to help his mother and siblings get the farm in shape and producing again. Reese meets him and gets a big crush on him.

At the beginning of the movie, the sisters are talking and they are saying that you can tell the man in the moon anything.

Of course, Reese's seventeen year old sister falls for the young man, too.

This movie brings about the stage of growing up because both sisters care so much for the young man and the older one meets him on the sly.

One day he is out plowing in a lonely portion of the farm. The sister has just left and he is not really paying attention to what he is doing. His head is snagged on a tree and it kills him.

This is a movie about best friends because they were all friends in different ways. The sisters, in the end, are talking like sisters again.

Forrest Gump, Lt. Dan and Bubba were such good friends in the movie. Jennie and Forrest were forever friends and most of all, Forrest loved his young son and oh, how he missed Jennie. I felt it for him.

There are so many movies about best friends. Scarlette and Mellie In Gone with the Wind, Dorothy and her entourage in "The Wizard of Oz" and Toto, and so many more I will think of when I sign off.

I recommend the two movies above to anyone. They are touching, funny and so true.
