Money vs. Recognition. This is the Heavyweight Championship match of all time. None other than Money would come out on top as Champion of the World. Let's consider the overall reasoning for this topic. We work as an employee for a purpose. That number one purpose is Money.
Money is a great motivator. Money is a form of appreciation. The greater appreciation the employer has for the employee, the greater the monetary value or earnings is received. We are motivated first to perform with greatness for better pay. That's where education levels and experience levels come into play.
Those who attain a Bachelor's, a Master's, a PhD, or a Medical degree are looking for the highest level of appreciation - the largest monetary earnings. You don't spend your time achieving such a goal and not expect to be financially rewarded. If that was the case, we would all drop out of high school, get a job and end up all making the same amount of Money. However, that is just not the case.
Achievements are earned. And the employer gives earnings. A value is placed on your knowledge and experience. You want to be rewarded accordingly. Who doesn't?
Now here is where recognition comes into play. If you are working for someone and you have done an exceptional job, you most certainly want to be recognized for your performance. This is most important when you are working for a company that you plan on being with for a long time. Without proper recognition, you would never stay somewhere you didn't feel you were an asset.
That is the number one drawback of many employers. If you do not want a high turnover of top quality employees, you must express appreciation with proper pay, praise and recognition. No one should be constantly criticized at work for all the wrong things they do and have all the good things overlooked. That is bad business.
Pay increases, Money. Your employee evaluation is all based on recognizing what type of an employee you are. How well did you perform and did you exceed the employer's expectations. Certainly if you surveyed and asked this key question: Would you be okay with not receiving a pay raise or cash bonus; if you were just recognized verbally or with an award? I think the consensus would be NO.
So truly one is certainly more important than the other. Although, together Money and Recognition would make a perfect balance for any employee.
