Poetry: Homesickness

A world inside me
Which no one here can know
or understand
My mind wanders to mountains,
and beaches, and palm trees
to my Dominican amigos
and churches and children
to dirty, scared children
in small, one room casas.
While the people here sit, unknowing
Uncomprehending
Of what lies behind my lonely eyes.

Memories transcend all time and space
and distance
Smiles and laughter and friends stay implanted
on my mind
Never will I forget Danilo or Angel
or Jairus or Ramon.
Color is irrelevant
Age is irrelevant, in the family of God.

Love is a universal word
A smile is a universal sign
Both love and smiles were shared
In that land of beauty
In that land of love

I dream on
and remember
Never daring to forget
Never wanting to forget
Never forgetting
What's past is past
But what's past will never die.

I love the Dominican, the people,
the culture.
My heart bleeds as my mind and thoughts
return and are implanted there,
admidst the beaches and palm trees
and oceans.

Someday, I'll be taken back
But not yet
No one can understand the
homesickness that I have
Or quite how much I miss it.
Only God
Perhaps, someday, I will return.
Perhaps.

    Homesick

    It sits there.
    Refusing to leave.
The unwelcome guest to my emotional being.
    Dancing and swaying.
    Churning around.
