TV commentary: Is Family Guy really a family show

Family guy is a hilarious show that explores the dynamic sometimes twisted relationship between the core characters (the family). The show is set in a suburban town. I personally love the show and enjoy the fact that it pushes the limits of television. All of that being said I would never recommend it to anyone under the age of sixteen. Some of there episodes have included sexist, prejudiced, racist and ignorant themes. Although I may find them funny there have been moments where I've found myself laughing at a joke that I would never tell. Does that mean I have a depraved sense of humor? Probably, but I am well beyond the age that someone can dictate what I view. I enjoy Family Guy for the same reason some other viewers do. It's just funny and it explores some pretty touchy subjects with blissful ignorance.

One of the main themes from the show is based on the youngest son continually trying to kill his mother. There have also been moments that I have been surprised by how far they went (I must admit even then I was laughing). They have touched on date rape, retardation, and many other sensitive subjects. The shows name "Family Guy" is a bit ironic considering Peter (the main character) is not especially a family guy. He is continually drunk, not very caring and at times ridiculously stupid. The youngest son (Stewie) is unreasonably angry and has been so since the beginning of the show. His caustic tone and sarcastic replies practically make the show for me. I know that being a cartoon many people assume it is aimed at children, but I don't think so. Any reasonable person who has watched the show for more than five minutes should realize that is not the case.

I'm also a fan of Japanese animation and can clearly say that all cartoons are not made with children in mind. Also keep in mind most of these shows run much later in the day and you can look up the parental writing rating on the internet. In conclusion I must say I find the show extremely funny and love the fact that the creators probably know the first amendment by heart and also have their lawyers on speed dial. I also know that not everyone can watch this show and walk away with just a smile (and not some insane thoughts). So no "Family Guy" is not in any way a family show. If you find yourself offended by the show or watching it when children around exercise a basic human right and change the channel. :0)
