Every poem is about love. It may be about the love of a house or garden or it may be about the love of a person. Poems are our expression of love or lack of love about a person, place or thing. Everyone will answer the question "What are the best love poems?" differently. Each answer is right.
There are many poets that express love, desire, sadness and loss in the words they let flow into the magic of a poem. Among the best poetry I have read are words that have come from great poets such as Walt Whitman, Robert and Elizabeth Browning, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Lord Byron.
Walt Whitman gave the world his poetic grace in Leaves of Grass which is a compilation of many poems written over time. Lines from his poem "A woman waits for me" speak about love, waiting, hurting and more. It is an exceptional poem about the love of women with the starting lines "A woman waits for me- she contains all, nothing is lacking".
Lord Byron has given the world beautiful words in the poem "She walks in beauty". The written words of love shine through in the ending lines "A mind at peace below, a heart whose love is innocent".
Robert and Elizabeth Browning were married poets who wrote lines of love to one another. They were also great poets without the love poems they shared. Robert Browning referred to his wife as his little Portuguese and she in turn wrote a sonnet of love from the Portuguese. Number 14 of the sonnets of the Portuguese end's with the lines "But love me for love's sake, that evermore thou may'st love on, through love's eternity."
Edna St. Vincent Millay was the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Her words were eloquently written in poems, sonnets and prose. Words of love, sorrow, god and more embodied her poetry. "Sweet love, Sweet thorn, when lightly to my heart" is among one of her beautiful love poems expressing love's misery.
There are many other poets who have created the best love poems. Sir Walter Raleigh, Christopher Marlow, Edmund Spenser and more are all amazing poets who have given us words of love to read. I have my preferences and you will have yours. We are both right when it comes to the best love poems written.
