I did not used to be an "angel person". Oh, I liked them just fine - they're really pretty, and the ways they are artistically expressed are almost always comforting. The idea of angels appealed to me, and I had no problem believing that such beings could exist. I'd heard stories my entire life about people's experiences with angels, being raised in the Assemblies of God church. But I never expected to embrace them in my own spiritual practice, and I was also rather disgusted with the way they had become a cultural phenomenon here in the United States. There are actually whole shops dedicated to angels, and I have to admit to being a little put off when something manages to go mainstream and becomes a "fad". It tends to lose its meaning at that point, for me.
Early on in my life, I relegated the angel experience to spiritual ascetics, religious fanatics, people in desperation, or people with underlying mental conditions. I did not think about them being available at all times to all people - even in the event of their actuality. I figured they were a spiritual breed set apart - for people who had a greater need or desire for their appearance.
A couple of years ago, however, I discovered a New Age musical artist who helped me to open my mind to learning more about the angelic experience, and I have somewhat lessened my irritation towards the "angel fans" of the world, because I sort of understand why people want to surround themselves with the reminders of their angelic encounters. I have not had an angel physically appear in my living room, one did not save me from certain death (that I know of), I have never been blessed with angel communication of any tangible sort. Yet I have "sensed" angelic presences in times of need or joy, and for some of us, that is enough to concrete the reality of their existence. (Yes, I know the difference between "what's real" and what's imagined!). I have experienced sharing with the angels and from that experience I have seen matters unfold to meet my needs - just as discussed with the angels.
Last year, during a time of great difficulty, I had a friend suggest that I set up an angel altar. She suggested my calling upon the Archangels Michael and Rafael for my troubles, and to use these certain symbols that have been given (through channel) in order to work more efficiently with the angels, along with their associated crystals and candles of certain colors to strengthen my call. It sounded a little goofy to me at the time, but
