Do I hate my job? No way. I love my job. It's a very rewarding job. After six years working for the same company, I am still very happy. I learn something different everyday and face many challenges.

At the age of 15, I started my venture in the work force. I have held many positions starting of course with fast food. I am sure you can guess that it probably was McDonalds. Everyone needs to start at McDonalds. It was great. After entering the work force, I new immediately that I loved to work. Now I am not saying all my jobs were great but I did and still do enjoy working. It's the way of life. Anyhow, from fast food to retail, to sock mills, construction to having my own little restaurant, I am now in the profession I love and will probably be here until I retire. Are you wondering what it is yet?

After selling my restaurant and moving from my home town of 20 years, I decided I wanted to work in the medical field. I returned to school for Medical Transcription after being turned down for the nursing program. I earned my certificate but couldn't find a job because everyone wanted 2-3 years experience. What a bummer! As luck would have it though, I did land a position at the hospital as Unit Secretary. Talk about being nervous. I couldn't read those physicians handwriting. Needless to say, I learned and became a very good secretary. But, that's not all. I also crossed-trained to become a patient care assistant. So now, my title is a multi-skilled tech. That wasn't enough for me because the more I learned, the more I wanted. When a position came open on the Labor/Delivery floor, I applied. This is going to be great. I will be able to see all those babies. After transfering, I found out they didn't want a secretary, they wanted to train me as a scrub tech. I was going to learn to pass the instruments to the doctors during C-sections, tubals and assist in vaginal births. Wow! I think I have made a mistake. Watching those babies being born is an experience I wouldn't have traded for anything in the world. I enjoyed my work on that floor but it just wasn't my kind of nursing. After 7 months I returned back to the Med/Surg. floor. I then decided to go back to school to finish Registered Nurse basic classes and reapply for the Nursing program. After 3 years, I was finally accepted into the program.

Many people don't know what it's like to be a nurse. I have had people say to me, "oh, I just couldn't do that, I can't bathe other people, or clean up mess, or deal with other people". Nursing is more than just that. Let me give you an example. A lady had walked up to the desk as I was coming around the corner. She said I know you. I am thinking, do I know you. Anyhow she started off saying I remember you and I hated you. My thought was oh no, what did I do? She said, "you came into my room after my surgery and made me walk. I didn't want to walk, I was hurting but you made me get up anyway." She then said "thank you". "If you hadn't of come in there and made me get up, I probably wouldn't have and wouldn't have recovered without problems. Thank you again". I almost cried. I see alot of people and I didn't really remember her, but she remembered me. That right there makes me love my job and gives me a sense of accomplishment. I made a difference in someone life. How great is that?

So, you see now how rewarding my job can be. It makes it all worthwile to get up and go to work to make someone feel better. I am very thankful that God gave me this opportunity.
