Squirrely Squirrel had just turned one year old. In people years that was like five years old. Squirrely wanted to learn everything about anything. His friend, Syndi Wise, was more than willing to help him learn. Syndi was two years old. In people years that was like ten years old. Squirrely thought that Syndi knew everything.
Today Squirrely was angry at his parents. They told him that he had to go out and collect nuts for the winter. Squirrely didn't know what winter was and he didn't want to go collect nuts.
"Squirrely, Squirrely", his mom called. Squirrely ignored her and ran to Charlie's tree. Squirrely always called Charlie his older friend even though Charlie was only one week older then him.
Charlie said "Hey Squirrely, you feel like exploring the new thing at the children's place down the street?"
Squirrely knew he could always count on Charlie to want adventure. "Sure, lets go"
He could still hear his mom calling him and wanted to get going before Charlie heard her.
It was too late. "Hey Squirrely, isn't that your mom calling you?" Charlie asked.
"Yeah, but I don't want to go home right now. Would you believe on my day off, she wants me to collect nuts? In fact she told me that I would have to help collect nuts everyday. I don't want to do it!" Squirrely told Charlie, as he climbed the tree by the children's place. "Charlie, you've got to see this! There are a whole bunch of children lined up at that new thing. We've got to get closer and check it out."
"Okay, okay I'm coming." Charlie said.
"I wonder what the thing is. A bunch of children are standing in a line to get to it. Do you think we can get closer?" Squirrely asked Charlie as he jumped to another tree.
"I don't know Squirrely, you know what Syndi says about getting to close to people. It's pretty dangerous." Charlie replied as he followed Squirrely.
Both squirrels remembered the story Syndi had told them about her best friend. The story went that Syndi and Tiffany were looking at some of the children close up and suddenly one little girl came over and picked Tiffany up by her tail. Tiffany was scared and ended up hurting the child. When the child let her go she started to scream and cry. Tiffany tried to get away, but she was surrounded by a bunch of adults. One of the adults came up behind her, scooped Tiffany up in a cloth bag. Tiffany was never seen again. Syndi was able to get away. From then on Syndi kept a safe distance from ALL people.
Both squirrels sat and watched until the children left.
