all he ever wanted. Hence, the capture of this fish could represent the fact that he had also "captured" his happiness. Secondly, the fish could be a representation of his wife. In his tale, he mentioned that he caught the fish using his wedding ring as bait and that "the only way to catch an uncatchable woman is to offer her a wedding ring." Edward could mean that although he managed to win Sandra's heart, the only way he could keep her until his death was to marry her. Thirdly, the fish actually represents Edward himself. This can be seen by the use of another motif; water. In 1 particular scene, Edward is submerged in a bath tub and he explains that he was afraid of "drying out". This suggests that Edward believes that the fish was a representation of himself. Furthermore, when Edward first left his hometown in search of the greater things that he believed he was meant for, the local witch told him that "the biggest fish in the river gets that way by never getting caught." This could be the reason why Edward might see himself as the fish because he was determined not to let life bring him down. In the town of Spectre, shoes were thrown up on a thread that the people were constantly bare footed. This symbolises perfection of the town, that the place was so wonderful that nobody wanted to leave, hence the redundancy of shoes. My favourite scene was the one where Edward soaked himself in the tub and was joined by his wife because it was romantic and showed the love that the couple have for each other. This bittersweet film reinterprets common themes, leaving the audience satisfied and enlightened.
