Should plus-sized clothing be modeled by plus-sized models? Of course plus-size clothing should be modeled by a plus-sized model. To do otherwise would constitute false advertising! Does the fashion industry see "Stupid" plastered on the foreheads of those of us who are plus-sized? Don't they think that we know the difference between a twiggy model in a so-called plus-sized outfit?
These days, even the regular sizes are inflated. What used to be a size twelve in 1970 is now a size eight or even a six today. Have any of you tried to fit into an outfit from that era? Okay, so I do have some left in my closet and, shamefully, am reluctant to give them away. But, they don't fit. They won't fit, so I don't even try to kid myself. When I see a plus-sized section of a store, the clothes definitely are marked according to today's standards. Let's face it, not only has our economy become inflated, but so have our bodies. When I see an advertisement in the paper, on the television or on the internet for these clothes, I want to see a plus-sized model modeling them.
There are many beautiful plus-sized people in this world. Although some think beauty is only skin deep, be realistic. Our society makes a visual judgment first, so if you are plus-sized, you should be able to look and feel good in your clothes. There is no excuse for frumpy, lumpy plus-sized people walking around in too tight clothing. There are plenty of trendy clothes for our plus-sized community, which is growing larger and larger each year, pardon the pun. We don't need to falsify the fact that a model is plus-sized by not having these trendy clothes advertised using plus-sized models.
Last year's America's Top Model was a plus-sized model. Her face is beautiful and, although she is curvy, she has a well toned body and wears her curves well. Why, then try to mystify the consumer by using someone who isn't plus-sized? There are many plus-sized models in the modeling industry, as proven by the efforts of Tyra Banks who has given much attention to this industry and brought its inception to the front burner. Use plus-sized models when advertising plus-sized clothing. To do otherwise is false advertising and should be prohibited.
I don't want to think that when I put that very same outfit on, modeled by a non-plus-sized model, that I, too, will look swanky and, even thin! Don't try to deceive the plus-sized community, advertisers.
You won't see "Stupid" written on my forehead, so don't try to think I am. Don't think that consumers will be stupid enough to perceive themselves as not being plus-sized. We are well aware of who and what we are. So, advertisers, stop trying to illustrate plus-sized clothing by using models who aren't plus-sized. All you are doing is trying to fool us and we aren't foolish.
