We aren't all blessed with wide-open spaces when it comes to living quarters. Sometimes, we have to settle for small spaces until something bigger and better comes along. This doesn't mean that we have to live from a box or cram the place so full that it is impossible to turn side ways. Small spaces can be beautifully decorated. You just need to be creative about it.
There are a large variety of options when it comes to decorating small spaces. First, you need to think about colors and wall dcor. Pick colors that will be bright and cheery or warm and inviting. Don't choose grim colors that will pull down the overall appearance of the room. Hang pictures and other decorations on the wall. This will make things look more homely and down to earth.
Pick window coverings that will make the room look sunny and happy. Don't choose dark drab items that will depress you. Use blinds and raise them often. Valances work better than long curtains in a small room. They give the window a dominant yet petite feel.
The floor can be decorated too. Long aerial rugs will give the impression of more space. Plus, they make the place look cozier. The type of material used in the rug can set the atmosphere to your environment. Avoid useless floor clutter. A few things sitting around are okay but overdoing it will only make it harder for people to navigate through your small space.
Basic furniture is important in all home environments. Pick small compact items rather than large bulky objects. If you have a couch, you won't also need a loveseat and several chairs. Choose simple furnishings that will provide comfort but not take up your much-needed space. Use throw pillows to toss around for an even cozier appeal.
Storage can be beneficial for those who have lots of items and little space. Rather than trying to cram everything on the floors or under beds, invest in some shelves for storage. You can find some great ones that will easily attach to walls and display your favorite items.
For linens and other clothing items that you will need but may have to cram together, there is hope. Rather than folding them up, roll them army style. You can gain a lot of space this way and they will still be neat and virtually wrinkle free.
If you don't have the finances to buy furniture, shelves, and other furnishings, simply be creative with your choices. Milk crates are terrific for multi purposes. You can paint and stack them for beautiful shelves. Cover them with cloth and use them as end tables or toss a few pillows on them and use them as stools.
If your rooms are close together or do not have doors, use dividers to separate the space. A simple partition can hide messier rooms or allow a certain sense of privacy. Beads or blinds hung over empty doorways can make things seem larger and provide a sense of space. You can move the partitions or raise blinds when company comes so that everyone doesn't feel so cramped.
The most important feature of all in a small space is the general upkeep of the area. Keep your personal space clean and neat. The cleaner it is, the better you will. Besides, if there is a lot of clutter then you are taking up precious space that you could be using for decorative fun!
