Investing in global warming

There are many companies that will prosper during a period of global warming. The consequences of global warming will benefit companies that produce energy without using fossil fuels, that can develop seeds and plants that resist drought and heat, that produce fertilizer to make soil more productive, that produce vehicles using renewable energy, and that own resources that are in climates that will be favorably impacted by global warming. With these trends in mind, the following companies are likely beneficiaries of global warming:

- Energy Producers: Vestas Wind (VWSYF) makes wind turbines for wind power, which is becoming increasingly cost efficient. SunPower (SPWR) makes business and residential solar power systems. Trina Solar (TSL) is a glass supplier to the solar industry, and is one of the low cost producers based in China. MEMC Electronics (WFR) makes the polysilicon wafers for solar panels, which promises to be a large growth business. Evergreen Solar (ESLR) is also a solar wafer maker using its own proprietary technology. A development stage company with unique solar technology is Daystar Technology (DSTI) that makes thin-film solar arrays for large installations as well as consumer and business arrays. For less risk, one can invest in Florida Power & Light (FPL), which is investing heavily in wind power, and has one nuclear operation, which could benefit from global warming. Also, Exelon (EXC) is a nuclear power producer that operates several nuclear facilities for electricity generation. Both Florida Power & Light and Exelon pay a dividend of between 2.5% to 2.9%.

- Seed and Plant Research: Three very profitable companies operate in this industry: Monsanto (MON), Bunge, Ltd. (BG), and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM). All three have active research and development programs to develop next generation seeds for drought and heat resistance, and all three companies are quite profitable as China and India adopt their genetically modified seeds and plants for increased production in very populated regions. All three companies pay a dividend.

- Soil Enhancement: The Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (POT) and The Mosaic Company (MOS) develop fertilizers and other soil enhancement products to make farmland more productive. Both companies will benefit as some land becomes non-arable due to global warming, while other land in northern climates gradually becomes arable farmland.

- Fuel Efficient Vehicles: The world's six billion people are not going to give up individual
