How is it determined when new movies come out on DVD?

by Joshua Murphy

Created on: September 12, 2008

In the case of releases, both new and old, it depends upon the time of theatrical release of the new and the amount of extra material not even come across before from an old release, say, 10, 15 or 20 years ago and then when you least expect it, you find yourself comprehending
why your looking at a movie that you saw that long ago that now has extra material including deleted scenes, commentary from director, actor and writer, 16:9 ratio widescreen or full frame format and so on and so forth.

Let's say that there's a movie in the theater that your going to watch and you liked it this much that you can watch it over again that you can actually push the pause button on so you can, "drop the kids off at the pool."
Today is September 12, 2008 and you wonder when it will come out on DVD.
There are four weeks in a month.
Your movie that premiered in theaters today you will actually buy on DVD on February 3, 2009.
Tuesdays are new release days every week and it takes 5 to 6 months for a theatrical release to come to stores, so in this case, February 3 is six months from now but if you believe that it'll take only 5 months, then it'll come out on January 6.
Remember, new movies always come out on Tuesdays and sometimes, the same goes with games, books, music and other stuff that really takes us by surprise and that's when we look in our pockets to see if we have enough money for this new stuff we got.

Now, another thing that can be an entertainment ambush on our part is that some movies actually make Hollywood's A-List that are 6 month wait worthy while a remaining few which did not make the list make it out on shelves in less than 3 to 4 months because of the lack of audience attention and/or based on a budget premium salary.
Like today, when I went shopping in Arkadelphia in Wal-Mart, I'm looking at the movies and on the other end of the rack, there's pictures of the next new releases and one of them is Mike Meyer's "The Love Guru".
It wasn't but only a month and a half ago when I read that in the theater movie section in the newspaper.
Some movies do look like they would be good and just as riveting when you see the trailers on TV and Youtube but when you actually see the movie for sale like, a month from now, you can actually tell that it did nothing to lift the skirts of the critics and the profits that go to each motion picture making company actually hurt them because of a drop of ticket sales of every theater in this country and the next.
Another reason for a decrease
