Tips on how to get better gas mileage

It seems as though the price of gas has taken a vacation from its steady skyrocket to the $5/gallon mark. However, with times as uncertain as they are, we could wake up tomorrow to find prices doubled. Even if you don't drive a hybrid or alternative-fuel vehicle, there are small adjustments, both mechanical and in driving habits, you can make to maximize what you pay the pump. With a little extra care and planning, the gas mileage on your current vehicle can easily increase.

Trading in the Suburban for a Prius is an obvious way to become more fuel economical. Yet, that's not exactly practical. Consider how you drive as the first step towards conserving precious gas. Cruising down the highway is fun when the lanes are traffic free, but unfortunately those speed limits are there for more than just your protection. While every vehicle is different, it is proven that optimal consumption occurs at about 55 mph. It may be worth it, not only for your safety, to observe that speed limit. Rapidly accelerating is also a gas guzzler. Instead of zooming away from that red light or stop sign, easy your way back up to speed.

Running around town, hectically doing errands is sure to fill up your trunk. Make sure you unload unnecessary weight once you return home. The lighter your vehicle is, the less gas it will take to get it moving, so that junk in your truck may definitely be slowing you down and eating away at your fuel tank.

While how you drive is a great contributor to fuel efficiency, keeping a well maintained car is the most important. Ensuring that all systems are working in sync will truly maximize your fuel expenditure and keep your engine humming for years to come. Make sure to schedule regular tune-ups (about every 5-10,000 miles) and don't ignore that Check Engine light! Fueleconomy.gov reports that keeping your vehicle in good repair can improve gas mileage by as much as 40%, a huge savings in today's market.

The last three key maintenance points are rather simple. Clean air filters protect not only the life of your engine, but also can optimize fuel use by 10%. Tire inflation is also an important benchmark to meet to make sure every drop of gas is working in your favor. Most regular sizes sedans require a pressure of around 30 psi (pounds per square inch), but consult your vehicle manual to be sure. Proper inflation will also extend the life of your tires, and ensure the safety of your car from scary incidents like a blow-out. Motor oil is the last essential piece of the fuel consumption puzzle. Again, check the vehicle manual for the recommended grade of motor oil and use only that for your car. Oil is critical to keep all the parts under the hood moving smoothly, so a lower grade can create damage and lower efficiency over time.

Maintaining a fuel efficient vehicle takes only a little diligence and effort. Practice altering your driving habits and pay special attention to car up-keep and soon you may notice that gallon of gas is getting you a lot farther.
