Day trips to enjoy the fall foliage

From late September through early November, the verdant leaves of summer transform into a blanket of rich reds, oranges, browns and yellows. Experience the beauty of autumn by bringing your family on an outdoor adventure.

Begin your fall foliage fun by finding out the peak color changes for your area. The Weather Channel offers a map for normal peak fall color at: http://www.weather.com/maps/ac tivity/fallfoliage/usnormalfal lpeaks_large.html The menu below the main map lists additional maps, such as those for the current fall color conditions and maps by region.

Some regions, such as New England or the Blue Ridge Mountains, are known for their fall foliage, but you do not have to travel far to experience the beauty of autumn. Look for locations that can be reached in two hours or less and be sure to bring some activities and snacks for the car ride.

Parks, hiking trails and bike paths are often found close to home. Pack a picnic lunch and plan a few of these fun activities to make the trip memorable:

Fall Nature Walks

Make up a list of fall nature items and print out one for each member of your family. Include items such as: types of leaves, pine cones, acorns, migrating geese, and bird nests. You can even look up common leaves in your area and add them to the list (with a picture to help identify them). Use stickers to mark each item found.

Corn Mazes

As fall approaches, corn mazes appear in fields across the country. The whole family will have fun getting lost and finding their way again. To find a corn maze near you, visit the Corn Maze Directory at http://www.cornmazedir.com. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes!

Leaf Rubbings

This can be easily done at a picnic table during lunch. Collect your favorite leaves and lay them vein-side up on a piece of paper. Cover them with another piece of paper. Peel the paper wrapper off of a crayon and rub it gently over the paper. Images of the leaves will appear like magic.

Wine Festivals and Tours

Autumn is prime time to visit your local wineries. The rows of grape leaves in a blaze of fall color are a stunning sight. Many wineries hold fall festivals with music, food, craft vendors and activities for the whole family. Some even have grape picking or stomping contests!

Pumpkin Picking

Pumpkin picking is popular for any fall foliage trip. Many pumpkin patches include other activities such as Moon Bounces, hay rides, and farm markets. If your trip is in mid to late October, it is prime time for pumpkin carving!

Whatever your plans include, don't forget to dress comfortably and bring rain gear in case of inclement weather. Pack plenty of water and snacks to keep everyone happy and a small first aid kit for scrapes and cuts.

With a little planning, your whole family will love your fall foliage adventure!
