A Wood in Autumn
The pathways through the wood are crisscrossed with the multitudinous trees' sturdy branches forming tunnel-like enclosures, through which the sun's rays occasionally penetrate quite weakly at this time of year when autumn has almost arrived. The hazy golden light thus created dimly lights the walker's path and, as the sun strikes the cool woodland air, a mysterious mistlike appearance is created, which blurs the edges of the trees and bushes causing them to loom out mysteriously as the pathways are traversed.
Whilst walking through the more densely wooded areas, the overhanging foliage appears in summer to be a bower, a shady archway of variously hued leaves: green, brown, sparkling yellow and all the in-between shades;but at this autumnal period through to the long dark winter, the bower becomes a dismal canopy, hindering the penetration of the watery sun's light. The silence then becomes eerie at times and, at the unexpected approach of the occasional traveller through their terrain, the birds become mute with fear. Far ahead, though, vibrant song may occasionally break out lifting the hearts of the weary passers-by.
As Autumn arrives the woodlands also lose their thick summer carpeting of blue bells, primroses, and Stars-of-David, which grow in great quantities like tiny fragile bells in the grassy surfaces surrounding the gargantuan tree trunks. The woodlands will remain largely bereft of foliage until the buds of Spring start to reappear once again.
This describes perfectly the wood in Harlech where we (my husband and I) visited a few years
