Films of 2006 saw some notable returns from familiar heroes. The best films of the year featured some of them, and more besides.
Let us start with Superman Returns. As the name suggests, this saw the Superman franchise re-awakened. The film did not disappoint audiences, with a worthy addition to the series. Overall, it was one of the top box office films of the year.
Then, the Bond series got its next installment more swiftly. However, with a new Bond and somewhat slightly different approach, the film went back to Bond's earliest missions. Casino Royale was a longer Bond film, with sterling action scenes and a nervy Poker game. It is regarded as one of the better Bond films in the series.
In celebration of the film's anniversary, Rocky also made a return to the big screen. And it did not disappoint, as a typical Rocky film for its fans and general audiences alike.
Still, 2006 offered plenty more than just old action heroes returning to the big screen. Directed by Clint East Wood, Letters from Iwo Jima was a war film set in 1944. Featuring Japanese defenders of Iwo Jima, it took a more unique perspective.
The Departed had much to offer. Packed with scenery chewing and strong performances, the film delivered sheer spectacle. Overall, it is a great thriller.
The Queen was a film that won some acclaim. As a film on a more limited budget, it was a brisk 93 minutes long but delivered great script, performances, production values and editing. The film was also nominated for Best Picture of the Year.
For an animated film, Cars was probably the film of the year. An animated feature film produced by Pixar entertainment, it won the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. Equally, it was also nominated for two Academy Awards.
Dream Girls is another film worthy of mention. This was an adaptation of the award winning 1981 musical, and it did not disappoint. Some of the songs are delivered in great style, and equally the cast helps the film along.
For box office impact, the highest grossing film of that year was Pirates of the Caribbean. It set 15 box office records, and is one of Disney's biggest hits. Although, the film did only receive mixed reviews and many considered it a hyped-up film. However, it won an Academy Award for best visual effects.
These were perhaps the best films of 2006. I for one found Casino Royale to be one of the better Bond movies in the series. At any rate, all these films delivered great entertainment, for family and more mature audiences alike.
