Poetry: America

Poetry: America

People from far away lands know her name
They speak of her fame and her shame
Equality lives in her heart
This nation once torn apart

By the shame of hatred and slavery
Still seeking true liberty
Her spirit shines for all to see
What will be her destiny?

Will she fade away like the empires of old?
She resembles ancient Rome, I'm told
By her less optimistic residents
These very enemies she circumvents

The blood of millions was shed for liberty
Since that very first war, she's bled for democracy
Keep this great nation alive for our children's sake
Plead, petition, and participate in this country only we make

America what is as a nation
We, the citizens, vote for legislation
Allow freedom of speech and religion
Move America toward renewal, not derision

Make changes that count for the liberty
Of every American now and those to be
We are a nation of greatness if all participate
In this great experiment called democracy
