Five little monkeys jumping the bed, one fell off, and bumped his head. Mama called the doctor and the doctor said, feed that monkey some monkey bread. Yeah, I know that's not how the song really goes, but it sure sounds like more fun than cracking your head!
Monkey bread is fun to eat, and little fingers love pulling the pieces of bread to stuff in their mouths. Little monkeys aren't the only ones who enjoy eating monkey bread. Even big monkeys like to dig in!
* 6 cups flour
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 2 cups milk
* 1 package yeast
* 2 eggs, slightly beaten
* 10 tablespoons melted butter
When you are ready to bake:
* 2 cups sugar
* 2 tablespoons cinnamon
* 1 cup chopped nuts
* 1 1/2 sticks melted butter
To 3 cups flour; add sugar and salt. Scald milk, and cool to lukewarm. Take out 1/2 cup of milk, and stir in yeast. Stir eggs and butter into remaining milk. Combine this with the 3 cups of flour, sugar, and yeast mixture; stir well. Cover with a towel, and let rise 1 1/2 hours. Stir in remaining flour and refrigerate overnight.
Grease large tube pan. Turn dough on floured surface and form balls. When you have used up all of the dough, begin dipping melted butter then into a mixture of 2 cups sugar and 2 tablespoons cinnamon. Fill pan by sprinkling bottom of pan with chopped nuts, adding a layer of balls, then alternating nut and balls until all dough is used up. Bake at 350 for 55 minutes; turn onto large plate.
When the monkeys want something sweet after jumping on the bed serve them some tasty monkey bread!
