The many ways to explore writing as a profession

A picture is worth a thousand words and yet a thousand words would fail to truly capture one emotion. To write is to exist, not everyone writes you say? I say everyone does not use the same quill and parchment, but all of us do indeed write. The trick it would seem is to find the method in which we write. Then find a way to live off of that.

A young baseball player who has struggled with drug addition and the loss of all of his favorite dreams, writes his way back into his life with the swing of a bat at the MLB Homerun derby. Now, thousands and thousands of words has he helped write with his pen the mighty Louisville Slugger. How much indeed has this story written? How many "writers" have mused word after word about this story? The words in fact echo his pen that says, "Here I am, this is my story!" This is a familiar writer, his prose warm and familiar as apply pie. The story of the fallen, to be then redeemed by a single act of greatness.

In each person exists a unique story that all of us can relate too. It is a fundamental aspect of our humanity to daily try to express that. Some of us are blessed with a gift of words and can translate our stories into a familiar medium. I would extend the responsibility of that gift to say that it is part of our responsibilities as writers to extend our talents to those whose storytelling gifts do not span to the realm of a "written word".

"How does this sentiment pertain to writing as a profession?" So you say, and I say that this concept must be part of the foundation of every writer's mind. It is a tool that enables all of us to the amazing stories all around us. Yes I know, I still have not answered the question. That is because it not for me to answer, writing is a way of life, not a job. Like all great art, if you write money will come. A Cop is a profession, a doctor is a profession, a politician has a profession. Writing is part of all of these things.

Writing is one of the few things in life that many people do for no money because it is the best way to convey the thoughts emotions, and colors that wander around our busy minds. Writing in and of its self is purely our mind on a page, and not even a pure version of that.

If you have the gift of words, then I welcome you to the world of the pen. Know that there is always a story to be told and never will you find yourself "Blocked". The choice, of course, is yours, if you choose to write only what you are told. Then I say to you that you are not a writer only. You then would have the makings of a fine dictation machine and could be replaced for $49.95.

I of course don't mean to shirk your contract responsibilities but to remember to write stories that have nothing to do with your personal mess. Every leaf that falls to the ground has a story that is worth hearing and only God cares, how great is it of us to write a single line in short poem about the leaves falling in their time. A writer is a gift and a responsibility not a job.

A profession you say, bah! It's a key to the soul, and a way of life.
