Cloning your pet for $150,000: Is it a new industry?

Cloning your beloved pet for any amount of money is going to be a disappointment. It's a sweet thought but one you really don't want to visit long term. That being said, pet cloning is going to be a new industry and probably a hugely successful one. Very much like the funeral industry, lots of money changing hands with an inevitable sad ending. Some company making a huge profit with your loved one still dead.

I have a dog I adore. Polar Bear, "Poly" for short. He adores me. Of all the dogs I have had in my life this one truly is the most loyal. My husband knows if anyone ever came up with a gun and said "Your husband or your dog." I would think about it for a second. I will miss him when he is gone (the dog). Okay, The husband too. I would never have Poly cloned. (Or the husband for that matter). I love them both very much but one is enough.

I believe that pets are like children. A lot of their personality comes from their nurturing. There are certain traits that are specific to a particular breed and that is something usually researched by a family for the best fit. Replacing a lost dog with one of the same breed is not the same arena as cloning. Since my dog is mixed I suppose cloning would be the only way to get close in that department. Still, I really believe in the nurturing factor. There are life experiences, family bonding and seasons of life that are in constant change. The cloning industry implies that you will get EXACTLY the same dog. Really, they do supply you with exactly the same dog, but the implication goes wrong after that.

If I had a new cloned "Poly puppy" at this time in my life, children raised and gone, he would not grow up with my children to take him to the river to swim or teach him about horses. He would not know that the school bus carries loved ones. He would live in a different part of the country, in a different neighborhood, with different doggie friends. Outside he might look like the same dog. Inside he would be a very different dog.

For the sake of children I also think this is a horrible plot. Our beloved family pet dies; let's make a new one just like him. Somehow there are important life lessons lost, both the grieving process and the sanctity of an individual life. Things so easily replaced are not treasured as much.

No, as tempting as cloning might be, when my good boy is gone I will go to the local shelter and look for another dog in need with the same silly look on his face and hope for the best. I know in my heart that no amount of money or science can replace my Poly.
