Being a pro-choice supporter is the most sensible opinion to hold. It is important to keep abortions legal not because you would get one, not because you have had one, but because it, like pro-life, saves lives too. It is important to be able to see things from more than your perspective. I feel that I have a good grasp on things when it comes to this controversial issue. I have facts and opinions that support my views.
Pro-life supporters believe that an abortion is the equivalent to murder. They believe that it is spitting in the face of God. Being a woman who believed she was unable to get pregnant, I can see why abortions are so unappealing. I would always wonder how anyone could get rid of their own flesh and blood. However, I would never take away woman's right to choose. Taking away the legality of abortion would only cause more pain and more lives lost than to keep it legal.
If a woman needs an abortion for medical reasons we would have to tell her that she could not have one. If a woman was raped why would she have to keep that man's baby? Another point that I would like to make is that if abortion were to become illegal, like it was in the 1920's, the same problems from the 20's would arise again. In the 20's women were forced to go to get back alley abortions that were usually extremely dangerous, had limited means for the procedure, and often resulted in death of both mother and child. The pro-life supporters should think hard about the consequences of taking away a medical procedure.
Another reason that abortions should stay legalized is that if a woman has to go full term in her pregnancy she may not want to put it up for adoption when it's needs are not going to be filled with her. The pro-life supporters have never mentioned a solution to poverty of a mother, or a program to help the families beyond food stamps. These children may lead awful lives of abuse without food, shelter, or a proper education.
People's views on this issue will forever be different. There is no article that will change your mind. I know this, however, I hope that if you are a pro-life supporter this has made you think about your views. Being pro-choice means that you have the right to choose. It does not mean that you condone abortion. It only means that you think it is an option that should be available to a woman. I will never get one, but I will never take that option away from someone else. That is why I am pro-choice.
